Larry Bowa, born Lawrence Robert Bowa, is undeniably a Phillies legend, a status that was far from certain when he began his journey in baseball. When he turns 79 on December 6, his legendary status will be solidified even further. To understand just how remarkable his journey is, we have to go back to 1965the year of the first ever summer Draft in Major League Baseball. Despite being a standout shortstop from Sacramento, California, Bowa wasnt selected. Instead, 824 other amateur players were. But that didnt stop him. The following fall, the Phillies signed him, marking the beginning of a career no one could have predicted.

He played 20 years for the Phillies, more than anyone else in the franchise's history. And before he ever suited up for a big-league game, Bowa spent four years in the Phillies' Minor League system. A scout, Eddie Bockman, had spotted Bowa during his time in Northern California. Despite not having the flashiest stats, Bockman saw Bowas grit and competitive edge, which led to a meeting with Phillies general manager Paul Owens in Los Angeles during a World Series. Bockman showed Owens film of Bowa's play, and despite not having a proper screen, they used a sheet as a backdrop. Impressed by what he saw, Owens signed Bowa to a contract worth $1,200.

Bowas early days were rocky. In his very first professional game with the Spartanburg Phillies, he struck out four times. The pitcher? Future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. His post-playing career was just as dynamic, including stints as a coach and manager for several teams, including the Padres, Yankees, and Dodgers. He also earned National League Manager of the Year honors in 2001, the only Phillies manager to receive that prestigious award.

Bowas competitive drive was legendary. He was known for being scrappy, chirpy, and never backing down from a challenge.
